It was about a month ago now. I was scouring Soundcloud for new music. This typically consists of clicking on a random song and letting Soundcloud continuously play. Out of nowhere a track titled Love Won’t Save Me played and I said whoa that’s a banger. I put it on loop, I was swept up by the smooth R&B inspired beat and heartfelt lyrics. After having the song play close to a dozen times, I went to listen to more from the artist and it was then that I discovered it was their only track. Their profile featured the face of Charlie Chaplin, I was captivated and I needed to know more.
The artist behind that incredible catchy track? A mysterious Brooklyn based duo by the name of BLANKSY. I reached out to them to learn more.
How did BLANKSY come together?
From the ashes of several other musical ventures.
What’s the meaning behind the name BLANKSY?
‘BLANKSY’ refers to us starting with a clean slate. A ‘reawakening’.
Could you explain the choice to use Charlie Chaplin as your social image?
We’re both just big fans – he was a massive influencer and innovator in early film, and serves as an inspiration to us.
Could you briefly describe how Love Won’t Save Me came together?
We started the track with producer John Calvert while on tour in London, then later finished writing and production when we got back to New York.
Could you break down the meaning behind the song?
It’s about a breakup – basically the only way to get over someone is time. Eventually it stops hurting and you can move on, you just have to wait it out.
What do you hope fans take away when listening to this track?
That they love the song and want to hear more from us.
What genre of music do you consider your work to be?
It sits somewhere in between hip-hop and pop mostly, with some electronic elements thrown in there.
Who are your major influences?
There are waaaaay too many for us to list between us – but Kanye is a big one for both of us. But we both listen to a pretty wide range of music both new and old, which is why most of the music we make can be harder to define genre wise.
Do you have a record label, if not are you seeking one or would you like to remain independent?
We’re currently happily independent.
What’s next for BLANKSY? Are there any upcoming shows or releases you would like to promote?
More new music coming soon – working on organising some shows later this year.
Where can fans follow what you are up to?
Social media! Instagram & Twitter: @blanksymusic. We don’t really do facebook, Twitter is rare but we’ll post there occasionally.
Any last words?
We didn’t start this project with hopes of world domination or fame. We just wanna make music that we connect with and hope that anyone that stumbles onto it can find something that distresses them.
Find BLANKSY on every platform including Soundcloud, Spotify, iTunes and more.
